Testimonials
A Parent’s Story: “I’ve got my son back”
“When Daniel first started at Adult Day Centre, he’d been at home for nearly two years. He’d left college, and there was just… nothing. He was bored, frustrated, and honestly, so was I. We were both stuck.
The first day he went, I was a nervous wreck. But when I picked him up, he was smiling. Actually smiling — not the polite kind, the real kind. He told me about the music session and how he’d made a cup of tea by himself.
Six months on, he goes three days a week. He has friends — real friends. He’s learning to catch the bus on his own. He talks about ‘his day centre’ like it’s the most normal thing in the world. And for the first time in a long time, I feel like he’s got a life that’s his, not just mine.”
— Sarah, Daniel’s mum
A Brother’s Story: “It gave us our family back”
“My sister has profound and multiple learning disabilities. She needs help with everything — eating, personal care, everything. I was her main carer, and I was running on empty. I love her more than anything, but I was drowning.
Adult Day Centre took the time to really understand her needs. They didn’t blink at the complexity. They just said, ‘Right, let’s figure out what’s going to work for her.’
She goes two days a week now. Those two days let me work, go to my own appointments, and just breathe. And she loves it — the sensory room, the music, the gentle interactions with staff who understand her. I can see it in her face.”
— James, brother and carer
An Autistic Adult’s Story: “It’s the one place I don’t have to mask”
“I was diagnosed with autism at 23. Before that, I’d spent years trying to fit in and burning out over and over. When my support worker suggested a day centre, I was horrified. I thought it would be patronising and babyish.
It’s not like that at all. At Adult Day Centre, I don’t have to pretend to be ‘normal.’ The staff understand sensory stuff — they don’t think I’m being difficult when I need quiet time. They built activities around my interests — I love computers, and they helped me do IT sessions and even some voluntary work.
I’ve made friends here. Real ones. People who get it. I go three days a week, and honestly, it’s the best part of my life right now.”
— Alex, attendee
A Parent’s Story: “They saw who he really is”
“Our son has autism and can display behaviours that challenge. He’s been asked to leave two previous settings. We were starting to lose hope.
Adult Day Centre was different from the first phone call. They didn’t sound scared of his behaviour. They asked questions — what triggers it, what helps, what does he love? They actually wanted to understand him.
They put a behaviour support plan in place from day one. They trained their staff. They prepared the environment. And when he had a difficult day in week two, they didn’t call us to come and get him. They managed it, they supported him, and they told us about it calmly at pickup.
He’s been there a year now. The behaviours haven’t disappeared — but they’ve reduced significantly. He’s calmer, more regulated, and more confident. And we finally have a team around him that sees who he really is.”
— Karen and Dave, parents
A Carer’s Story: “I didn’t know I needed it this much”
“I care for my partner, who has a learning disability and autism. I didn’t think I needed respite — I thought I was managing. I wasn’t.
The one day a week he goes to Adult Day Centre has changed everything. Not just for him — for us. I have time to myself, he has time with other people, and when he comes home, we both have something to talk about that isn’t just… us.
I wish I’d done it sooner.”
— Tom, partner and carer
